Aangezien ik al een aantal jaren met pensioen ben, heb ik niet langer inkomsten nodig uit de verkoop van mijn (Engelstalige) KD-rapporten over kleine windmolens. Ik heb daarom besloten dat vanaf nu alle openbare KD-rapporten gratis door iedereen gekopieerd mogen worden. Dit betreft tien extra rapporten met voormalige prijzen tussen € 20 en € 40. Mijn belangrijkste rapport is zeker KD 35: Rotor design and matching for horizontal axis wind turbines. Rapport KD 196 geeft vragen en antwoorden over elk hoofdstuk van KD 35 in het Engels en het Nederlands. Een lijst met alle 46 gratis KD-rapporten wordt gegeven als het eerste onderwerp van het menu KD-rapporten op mijn website: www.kdwindturbines.nl. Alle rapporten hebben een tamelijk lange titel die een goede indruk geeft van de inhoud.
 
Het recentste rapport is KD 598: Ideas about the 3-bladed VIRYA-0.65 water turbine with 20° inclined shaft coupled to the generator of the VIRYA-2.68 windmill for 12 V battery charging.

The rotors of the VIRYA-1.75, the VIRYA-1.8 and the VIRYA-2.2 S windmills have three blades which are made from stainless steel sheet. The blades are bolted to a stainless steel hub plate. Each blade is curved and twisted. The three ears of the hub plate are also curved and twisted. Special tools are developed for curving and twisting so these rotors are very suited to serial manufacture.

The VIRYA-1.8D, the VIRYA-3.8 and the VIRYA-4.1 windmills are designed especially for manufacture in developing countries. These three VIRYA windmills have 3-bladed rotors
and are meant for 24 V battery charging except the VIRYA-4.1 which is meant for 48 V battery charging. The blades are made from galvanised steel sheet and have 7.14 % cambered airfoils. The blades are bolted to a welded  hub assembly.

The VIRYA-3, the VIRYA-3B3, the VIRYA-4.2 and the VIRYA-4.6B2 windmills. These four VIRYA windmills are designed especially for manufacturing in developing countries.The VIRYA-3,the VIRYA-4.2 and the VIRYA-4.6B2 have 2-bladed rotors. 2-bladed rotors are easier to manufacture and to balance and can even be transported completely mounted.

The rotors of the VIRYA-1.25, the VIRYA-1.825 and the VIRYA-2.68 windmills have two blades which are made from cambered stainless steel sheet with a constant chord. The VIRYA-1.25 has a very simple rotor, made of one stainless steel strip with cambered and twisted blades. The VIRYA-1.825 and the VIRYA-2.68 have two separate non twisted blades which are bolted to a central strip. These rotors are relatively lighter.

The VIRYA-3.3Sis a new type electricity generating windmill primarily designed for water pumping using a small centrifugal pump with a 3-phaseasynchronous motor. However, the windmillcan also be used for 24 V battery charging if the generator is provided with a low voltage winding which is rectified in star. Most VIRYA windmills have PM-generators made from asynchronous motors. However, in some developing countries it appears to be too difficult or too expensive to make such generators. For theVIRYA-3.5 and the VIRYA-3.18 it is therefore decided to use an axial flux PM-generator of Chinese manufacture. The choice of the generator is explained in the design report of the rotor KD 589 for the VIRYA-3.5 and KD 590 for the VIRYA-3.18. It is chosen to use an axial flux generator which can supply a rated electrical power of 1 kW at a rated rotational speed of 350 rpm and a DC voltage of 56 V (after rectification). This generator is supplied by different Chinese suppliers. Provisionally the supplier Hefei Top Grand is chosen. The generator type number of this supplier is TGET320-1KW.350R. The characteristics of the generator are only given in the Chinese folder for a resistance load. The characteristics for a 48 V battery loadare derived in KD 589 and in KD 590 and are given in figure 4 of these reports. With these characteristics it was possible to derive the Pel-V curve for 48V battery charging. The Pel-V curves of both windmills are given figure 1. The VIRYA-3.5 has a 2-bladed rotor with wooden blades connected to each other by a twisted steel strip like it is also done for the VIRYA-4.2 rotor. The VIRYA-3.18 has a rotor with two stainless steel blades. The tower has a lower section made of angle iron and strip and an upper section made of a single pipe. It looks about the same as the tower of the former VIRYA-3D windmill given in the photo below.

From 1975 until 1990 the Dutch organisation CWD (Consultancy services Wind energy Developing countries), published many reports about wind energy and water pumping windmills. I worked for almost fifteen year as a mechanical engineer and designer in the wind energy group of the University of Technology Eindhoven (TUE), one of the members of CWD.
